BOTOX® COSMETIC

Adminstered by Board Certified physician. Serving clients from Orange Park, Jacksonville, St. Augustine, and other nearby Northeast Florida communities.

Botox® Cosmetic is also used to treat:

  • Forehead Wrinkles
  • Crows Feet (wrinkles around the eyes)
  • Excessive Underarm sweating (Hyperhidrosis)

What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a purified protein approved for the temporary treatment of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows in people ages 18–65.

What is the procedure like?

It’s a simple, quick non-surgical treatment consisting of a few tiny injections with no subsequent downtime. The doctor decides exactly where to administer BOTOX® Cosmetic for the best results. The diagram below demonstrates the usual sites of injection for treating frown lines between the eyebrows:

BOTOX® Cosmetic is also often used to treat horizontal wrinkles on the forehead and wrinkles on the sides of the eyes (crow’s feet).

How does BOTOX work?

With a few tiny injections, BOTOX® Cosmetic blocks the release of acetylcholine, the chemical that causes muscles to contract. With less movement, the skin surface gradually smoothes out and the lines begin to fade.

How can I be sure I’m getting real BOTOX® Cosmetic?

In Florida, only licensed physicians with specialized Botox training can purchase BOTOX from  Allergan, Inc., the manufacturer of BOTOX® Cosmetic; and each box and vial of BOTOX has the official  “Allergan” hologram label.

Is the procedure painful?

In our office, patients usually experience little discomfort with Dr. Lloyd’s BOTOX injection technique.

What are the side effects?

The most common side effects following injection of BOTOX® Cosmetic generally include temporary eyelid droop and nausea.  As with any injection, localized pain, bleeding, infection, inflammation, tenderness, swelling, redness, and/or bruising are possible side effects. However, the great majority of our patients experience minimal if any side effects.

Will I need anesthesia?

No.

When will I start to see results?

You should start to see a visible improvement within a few days. The area may continue to improve for up to 1-2 weeks.

How long will the results last?

With proper unit dosing, the effects of  BOTOX® Cosmetic usually lasts for 3-4 months.

How will BOTOX® Cosmetic affect my facial expressions?

With proper dosing and placement BOTOX® Cosmetic helps to smooth out wrinkles without affecting your ability to laugh, smile, or otherwise express yourself.

Is BOTOX® Cosmetic expensive?

Actually, BOTOX is one of the most affordable cosmetic medical procedures available.  Our treatment price is $13 per unit. The usual dosage for the treatment frown lines between the eyebrows is 20 Units (=$260). Typically, treating the horizontal forehead lines or the crow’s feet costs even less because they require less units of BOTOX.

History of BOTOX

Researchers discovered in the 1950's that injecting overactive muscles with tiny quantities of botulinum toxin type A decreased muscle activity by blocking the release of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction, thereby rendering the muscle unable to contract for a period of 4 to 6 months.

In 1980, Dr. Alan B Scott, MD, a San Francisco ophthalmologist, first used botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) in humans to treat strabismus (‘crossed eyes’). In 1989, BTX-A (BOTOX) was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of strabismus, blepharospasm (uncontrollable tremors of the eyelids), and hemifacial spasm in patients over 12 years old.
Several opthamologists who used BOTOX for eye muscle disorders noted wrinkle reduction in the areas treated with BOTOX. This lead to clinical trials and subsequent FDA approval of BOTOX for cosmetic use (BOTOX Cosmetic) in 2002. BOTOX has also been approved for the treatment of excessive underarm sweating.

BOTOX manufactured by Allergan Inc., is the only botulinum toxin type A approved for use in the U.S. Dysport is the brand name for botulinum toxin type A developed and manufactured in the UK and is used in several countries world wide. Neuronox is the brand name for a new botulinum toxin type A manufactured by Medy-Tox Inc in South Korea.

Interesting Facts About BOTOX

  • It is A purified protein complex derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum
  • For over 16 years, BOTOX® (botulinum toxin type A) has been used to treat a variety of medical conditions
  • BOTOX® is approved in more than 75 countries
  • BOTOX® for therapeutic use remains one of the most widely researched medicines in the world
  • In Florida, a BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment is considered the practice of medicine and therefore should only be performed by a licensed Physician, Physician Assistant, or Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner.
  • In 2004, over 2.8 million BOTOX Cosmetic procedures were performed in the US.
  • The BOTOX Cosmetic treatment is the most popular of all physician-administered cosmetic procedures (surgical and non-surgical combined) since its approval in 2002!!

Important Safety Information

The most common side effects following injection include temporary eyelid droop and nausea. Localized pain, infection, inflammation, tenderness, swelling, redness, and/or bleeding/bruising may be associated with the injection. Patients with certain neuromuscular disorders such as ALS, myasthenia gravis, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome may be at increased risk of serious side effects, and therefore, should not receive BOTOX

BLUE & RED LIGHT THERAPY FOR ACNE

This treatment utilizes a FDA approved medical device with Blue LEDs in conjunction with Red LEDs to:

  • Destroy the bacteria responsible for the inflammation
  • Stimulate cell growth
  • Decrease inflammation and pore size
  • Limit oil production in the future

How does it work?

P. acnes (Propionibacterium acne) is one of the key bacteria responsible for inflammation in acne. This bacterium produces natural chemicals called poryphyrins, which are sensitive to light at different wavelengths. Blue LED Light neutralizes the bacteria that cause the redness and inflammation of acne and Red LED Light has anti-inflammatory properties. A series of Blue & Red Light treatments help to decrease redness from acne and promotes healthier skin.

Who can benefit from this series of Blue & Red Light Therapy treatments?

Anyone suffering with mild to moderate inflammatory acne.

Is this treatment painful?

NO! This is a noninvasive painless treatment.

What results can be expected from a series of treatments?

Optimum results will be seen between 4-8 weeks after treatments.  The light stimulates natural processes that go on after the treatment has stopped. Studies have shown complete clearance of lesions, in some patients. On average, 81% of acne lesions clear.

How many treatments will I need?

Over the course of four weeks, eight treatments will be administered, alternating between blue and red LEDs.

How long do the effects last?

For most patients, acne is gone for six months. In some cases, touch-up treatment (typically two to four treatments) may be necessary.

IPL/PHOTOFACIAL

A "photofacial" is a treatment to improve the appearance of aging skin with the use of non-ablative lasers or light sources. We use Palomar's Intense Pulsed Light System to remove/lessen skin discoloration such as age/sun spots, rosacea, and spider veins on the face. Return to work the same or next day

Our photofacial treatments are usually performed in less than 45 minutes with little or no subsequent down-time. A topical anesthesia can be used for maximum comfort. For sensitive skin a compress is applied following treatment.

What improvement will I see?

Patients have a high degree of satisfaction with their results. Many have seen 70% to 90% improvement. After successive treatments, the skin will feel smoother and appear to have a more even tone.

How many treatments will I need?

For optimal results, a series of 5 treatments are recommended. Some patients see significant improvement in 2 to 3 treatments; others require more. Follow-up treatments may be desired once a year to maintain results.

DERMAL FILLERS

Our most popular dermal filler is hyaluronic acid-(Brand Names: Juvederm and Restylane). These fillers are used to fill Nasolabial Folds (folds between corners of nose and corners of mouth) and other wrinkles.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a natural complex sugar found in all living cells, and one or the major components of the dermis connective tissue matrix, along with collagen and elastin. Hyaluronic acid retains water like a sponge, absorbing more than 1000 times its weight.  This helps to attract and maintain water, hydrating your skin and increasing its volume and density.

How long do dermal fillers last?

Juvederm lasts approximately 12 months, and comes in 0.8 ml syringes. Restylane lasts about 6 months and comes in 1.0 ml syringes.

How soon will I see the results?

What is really nice about these treatments is that the results are immediate!
Often the wrinkle or fold will be diminished by 50 - 80% or more depending upon the amount of filler used.

Do the injections hurt?

Restylane and Juvederm products are injected directly into the skin in small amounts by an ultra fine needle.  As with all injections, some patients may experience discomfort.  To increase your comfort, our doctor will assess your need for pain management and determine what technique is right for you.

REFIRME SKIN TIGHTENING

Tighten and Firm Skin without downtime!
We’re proud to offer ReFirme, the first and only technology that uses combined energies to effectively and gently tighten your skin.

What is the ReFirme ST procedure?

The ReFirme ST procedure combines safe and effective levels of infrared light and bipolar radio frequency energies to tighten the skin by stimulating new collagen growth, with no down-time.

What can I expect from ReFirme ST treatments?

The ReFirme ST procedure can improve skin laxity and sagging of the face, neck and some body areas such as the abdomen or upper arms.  Skin texture can also become  smoother by the tightening and firming effect of the treatment.  This treatment is non-invasive.  Patients can return to work immediately.

How many treatments are required?

Most patients will have 5 treatments.

How often are treatments done?

Treatment sessions are typically 2-4 weeks apart.

How long do treatments take?

Each treatment session typically takes 30-40 minutes.

Does it hurt?

No. The ReFirme ST procedure is well tolerated by most patients without any topical anesthetic or other means of analgesia.  The treatment tip is chilled so it provides contact cooling to the skin surface for added comfort.

Are there any risks to treatment?

As is the case with all laser type treatments, side effects such as superficial blistering, crusting, and pigmenting changes in the skin, are possible.  These side effects with the ST procedure are rare.

Who should be treated with the ReFirme ST procedure?

All skin colors can be treated with this procedure for tightening loose skin on the face and body.  Common treatment areas where patients benefit from ReFirme skin tightening are: under the jaw (“turkey neck”), around the eyes, along the jaw line (“jowls”), the neck, upper arms, and abdomen.

REFIRME WRINKLE REDUCTION

Reduce Wrinkles & Improve Skin Smoothness without downtime!
We’re proud to offer ReFirme, the first and only technology that uses combined energies to gently and effectively smooth wrinkled skin.

What is the ReFirme WR procedure?

The ReFirme WR procedure combines laser and radio frequency energies to stimulate new collagen growth, creating a smoother and softer appearance.

What can I expect from ReFirme WR Treatments?

The ReFirme WR procedure can improve wrinkles, enlarged pores, superficial acne scarring, rough skin texture, and skin laxity of the face and neck.  This is a noninvasive procedure; most people leave the treatment with only slight pinkness or no pinkness at all, and can return to work immediately.

How many treatments are required?

Most patients will have 5 treatments.

How long do treatments take?

Each treatment session typically takes 30-45 minutes.

Does the treatment hurt?

The sensation may be described as a “hot pinch”, like someone snapping an elastic band on your skin. Patients tolerate treatment well by use of either cooling the skin during treatment and/or use of a topical anesthetic cream that numbs the skin.

Are there any risks to treatment?

ANY medical laser procedure has risk of side effects such as superficial blistering, crusting, and pigmenting changes in the skin.  These side effects are rare; and if they occur, usually quickly resolve.  The WR treatment incorporates several technological advances that focus on patient safety to minimize these risks and provide greater satisfaction.  The laser hand piece is also cooled for skin protection and comfort during the procedure.

Who should be treated with the ReFirme WR procedure?

Anyone with unwanted moderate wrinkles, superficial acne scarring, enlarged pores, or rough skin texture from chronic sun-damage.  Pigmentation from chronic sun-damage may also improve over the series of treatments.

THERMAGE®

The Thermage® procedure is a wonderful way to look younger without the expense or down time of surgery. This procedure employs a patented radiofrequency (RF) technology that has been clinically proven to tighten and gently lift skin to smooth out wrinkles and renew facial contours. This incision-free procedure is fast and easy, and requires no down-time from normal activities. The procedure can be performed on patients of all skin types. Thermage® is the only FDA approved procedure to tighten facial skin without surgery.

What Is The Procedure Like?

The Thermage® procedure usually takes 1 - 2.5 hours depending on the size of the treatment area. During the Thermage® procedure, the deep layer of the skin is being heated with radiofrequency energy while the outer layer of the skin is being cooled with a cryogen. In response to the heat, the collagen in the deep layer of the skin contracts. Over time, new and remodeled collagen is produced to further tighten the skin, resulting in healthier, and smoother skin; and a more youthful appearance.

When Will I See Results?

Visible tightening improvements usually appear gradually over 2 to 6 months after a single treatment session. However, many patients have reported seeing an earlier response.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Unlike many laser procedures requiring four or more sessions, a single Thermage® treatment has produced results in the majority of patients.

How Long Do The Results Last?

The Thermage® procedure causes immediate tightening of the collagen structure, with additional tightening over time. Published clinical research has shown sustained results lasting 1 year; and in unpublished reports, results are seen lasting 2, 3, and more years.

ARTEFILL

An innovation in safe, enduring wrinkle correction!
ArteFill is the first and only FDA-approved non-resoluble injection filler for the correction of wrinkles known as smile lines. It contains 20% tiny round and smooth particles (PMMA micro spheres) and 80% purified bovine collagen gel with 0.3% lidocaine, an anesthetic.

How is ArteFill different from temporary dermal fillers?

All temporary fillers are eventually absorbed by the body. That’s why they require frequent repeat injections. ArteFill is different. The unique micro spheres in ArteFill are not absorbed by the body. These micro spheres provide the permanent support your skin needs for long-lasting wrinkle correction. Now, with ArteFill, you can get the lasting wrinkle correction you want in just one or two treatments.  Where the results of temporary fillers end, the long-lasting benefits of ArteFill continue.

How does ArteFill work?

ArteFill is a dual-action injection wrinkle filler. First, ArteFill visibly corrects the wrinkle. Then the micro spheres provide the permanent support your skin needs for long-lasting wrinkle correction.

How does ArteFill Treatment compare to temporary fillers?

The treatment itself is similar. It involves injections with a fine needle and takes only a few minutes. You can resume your normal activities immediately.

Is ArteFill Safe?

Yes. The FDA has approved ArteFill for the safe and effective correction of smile lines. Before your initial treatment with ArteFill, a skin test must be administered at least 28 days prior to your first scheduled ArteFill treatment to screen for an allergy to the anesthetic and bovine collagen in ArteFill.

Can anyone have ArteFill treatments?

No. Some people are not good candidates for ArteFill.  ArteFill is contraindicated in those who:

  • Have a positive reaction to the ArteFill skin test
  • Have a history of severe allergies and hypersensitivity (anaphylaxis)
  • Are allergic to the anesthetic (lidocaine) in ArteFill
  • Have a history of allergies to any bovine collagen products
  • Are prone to thick scarring (hypertrophy) formation and/or excessive scarring (keloid)
  • Are undergoing or planning to undergo desensitizing injections to meat products

MICRODERMABRASION

Microdermabrasion is a skin-freshening and resurfacing technique that helps repair facial skin that takes a beating from the sun and the effects of aging. At Allure Cosmetic Medical Center, our doctor uses a device called the DiamondTome. The DiamondTome wand has polishing action of diamond chips and the cleaning action of a vacuum. It is moved across the face, mixing gentle abrasion with suction to remove the dead, outer layer of skin. As with other skin rejuvenation techniques, more than one treatment may be needed to reduce or remove fine wrinkles, acne scarring, and unwanted pigmentation.

What Is The Procedure Like?

If you've been looking for a sensible skin-smoothing strategy, now you've found it. Microdermabrasion is a non-surgical exfoliating procedure for both men and women. Performed one time or in a series, it can revitalize the skin's youthful appearance and smoothness.

What Does It Treat?

In addition to the face, microdermabrasion resurfacing can be successfully used on the neck, back, shoulders, arms, hands, and legs. This rejuvenation method is generally indicated for:

  • Dull, oily or leathery skin texture
  • Contracting enlarged pores
  • Exfoliating and suctioning clogged pores in acne cases
  • Polishing and reducing fine lines
  • Mild acne scarring
  • Mild pigment irregularities
  • Enhancing penetration of therapeutic agents

Microdermabrasion also promotes the production of new cells in the basal (deepest) layer of the dermis. It can clean your pores incredibly and hinder any future break outs if used on a regular basis. Microdermabrasion also stimulates collagen production to further even out skin texture and appearance.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Treatment series vary from four to ten sessions depending on the condition being treated and the type of skin. It is recommended that you schedule an additional treatment every 1 to 3 months to maintain your skin in excellent condition. Most patients actually feel and see a difference just after one or two treatments but schedule additional treatments to increase this improvement.

When Will I Notice The Results?

Your skin will feel vibrant and healthy and you will notice an immediate difference in your softer, smoother skin. There is virtually no recovery time, no discomfort and you can return to work immediately. A series of microdermabrasion treatments can help reduce the look of fine lines, superficial wrinkles, large pores, and blemishes.
